The University of Oklahoma, commonly known as OU, is a coeducational public research university in Norman, OK, the county seat of Cleveland County, in Oklahoma, USA, and part of Oklahoma City Metropolitan area. The city was founded during the Land Run of April 1889, being incorporated in 1891, and according to CNN/Money Magazine (2008), is the 6th best small city in the States, to live in.
OU's history started back in 1889, when Governor of Oklahoma Territory, George Washington Steele, expressed his wish to `create public school systems and universities of higher education`, urging the Oklahoma Territorial legislature to do so. In 1890, 3 universities were founded: the state university in Norman, the mechanical college in Stillwater, which was later, renamed Oklahoma State University, and a normal school in Edmond, later known as University of Central Oklahoma.
The name of University of Oklahoma was settled in 1907, during Oklahoma's admission into the union, also being the current name, by which the university is known today. Over the years, the university grew, into the `Best Value` colleges of Oklahoma, according to the Princeton Review (2007), with an enrollment estimated at a number of nearly 30 000 students.
OU is well-known for its strong academic and successful athletic programs, the Oklahoma Sooners winning 7 NCAA Division I National Football Championships, 2 NCAA National Championships in baseball and one national championship (2000) in women's softball. The teams have also won 4 national gymnastics championships, since 2002, and the football program at OU has the best winning percentage of any Division I.
